The Power of the Pivot: When It’s Time to Change Direction
Pivoting in business is one of those things people talk about all the time, but not many people actually understand what it feels like when you’re in it.
We hear the success stories. We see the highlight reels. But we don’t always talk about the middle part…the uncertainty, the fear, and the courage it takes to walk away from something that once felt right.
In this week’s podcast, I had a conversation that really brought this to life. I sat down with Krystal Hanks, who went from running a multimillion-dollar construction business to becoming an attorney.
And what stood out most to me is this… her story isn’t about starting over. It’s about stepping into alignment. Because that’s what a pivot really is.
It’s not throwing everything away and beginning from scratch. It’s a shift. A redirection. A decision to move toward something that feels more aligned with who you are now, not who you were when you first started.
And usually, that realization doesn’t hit all at once. It starts internally. It might look like feeling disconnected from what you’re doing, even if it’s working. It might feel like burnout, or a lack of excitement, or that quiet thought in the back of your mind that says, “This isn’t it anymore.” Sometimes it’s just feeling stuck, like you know you’re meant for growth but nothing around you is changing.
Those moments are easy to ignore, but they’re important. They’re not signs that you’ve failed. They’re signals that something needs to shift.
Of course, the moment you start thinking about change, fear shows up right on time.
And that’s normal.
Fear is part of the process. It doesn’t mean you’re making the wrong decision. If anything, it usually means what you’re considering actually matters. The mistake isn’t feeling fear, it’s letting it keep you in a place you’ve already outgrown.
One of the most powerful questions that came out of this conversation was simple, but it really makes you think: If nothing changes, will I be happy here in 10 years? That question creates clarity quickly.
Because at the end of the day, you’re choosing between staying where you are or stepping into something new. Neither option is easy, but only one moves you forward.
And here’s something I think more people need to hear… when you pivot, you are not starting over.
You’re bringing everything with you. Your experience, your skills, your perspective, the lessons you’ve learned along the way. All of it comes with you into that next chapter. And more often than not, that’s exactly what gives you an edge.
So if you’ve been feeling that pull to do something different, the first step isn’t having the entire plan mapped out.
It’s getting honest with yourself.
What do you actually want?
Are you willing to commit to it?
And what is it going to require of you?
You don’t have to leap overnight. You can start small. You can take one step at a time. But at some point, you do have to move.
Because staying in the same place when you know you’re meant for more… that has a cost too.
If there’s one thing I hope you take away from this, it’s this: It may be hard, but you can do it.
Pivoting isn’t easy. It will stretch you. It will challenge you. But it will also grow you in ways staying comfortable never will. And your next chapter might be waiting on the other side of one brave decision.
