Is It Time to Rethink Your Career?

Mar 11, 2025 | Business

Do you have a role in the workforce? Are you working in a field that aligns with your degree, trade school training, or certification? Maybe you took the entrepreneurial route and carved your own path, or perhaps you stepped into a family business. No matter how you got here, one big question remains:

Are you happy in your career, and could changing it improve your life?

The Evolution of Career Choices

Our careers often span the longest chapter of our lives. We spend years getting an education, raising a family, and eventually retiring—but for most of us, our work history takes up a significant portion of that journey. What once excited us as young professionals may feel less fulfilling in midlife. Our priorities shift, and sometimes, so do our career aspirations.

When we first choose a career, several factors influence our decision:

  • Parental or societal expectations – Family traditions or cultural norms may steer us toward certain professions.
  • Geography – Where we live can limit our career options.
  • Economic circumstances – Financial constraints may determine whether we pursue higher education or choose a trade.

As we get older, different priorities start shaping our career choices:

  • Benefits – Health insurance, paid time off, and retirement plans become essential.
  • Income – Financial security often takes precedence over passion.
  • Seniority – Stability and career growth can make it harder to walk away, even if we’ve lost interest.

If your career feels uninspiring or unfulfilling, it might be time for a change. The fear of the unknown often holds us back, but staying in a career that no longer serves you is no way to live.

How to Make a Career Shift

If you’re considering a change, here are a few steps to help you move forward:

1. Talk to Someone in Your Desired Field

Seek out professionals working in the career you’re interested in. Many people are willing to share their experiences, offer advice, or even mentor you. Be bold—ask for a conversation!

2. Explore Further Education

It’s never too late to learn something new. Look into degree programs, certifications, or skill-building courses—whether online or in person—to help you transition into a new role.

3. Consider Entrepreneurship

You don’t always need a formal education to start something new. If you have a business idea or a skill you can monetize, stepping into entrepreneurship might be the right move.

4. Start a Side Hustle

If you’re unsure whether your passion can become a full-time career, test the waters with a side hustle. It’s a low-risk way to explore new opportunities while maintaining financial stability.

It’s Never Too Late to Change Your Life

If you feel stuck, unmotivated, or like you’ve missed out on something better, remember—it’s never too late to change your career and transform your life. You deserve to spend your working years doing something you love. Take the first step and explore what’s possible.

The Best Marketing Doesn’t Feel Like Marketing

Stop Waiting for Permission to Put Yourself Out There

There was a time when I believed that if I worked hard enough and was good enough at what I did, people would notice. Do great work, build a great business, take care of your customers, and the opportunities will come. And while I still believe every one of those...

You Are Not Your Business: Separating Self-Worth From Success

Working Longer Isn’t Making You More Productive

There’s a trap I think a lot of entrepreneurs fall into, and I am absolutely guilty of it: if I’m still sitting at my desk, I must still be productive. If I’m answering emails while eating lunch, squeezing in one more task before I stop for the day, or staring at the...

Stop Managing Your Time. Start Managing Your Energy.

Entrepreneurs spend a lot of time talking about time management. We block our calendars, make lists, schedule meetings, set reminders, and try to squeeze as much productivity as possible into every available hour. But time isn’t always the problem. You can have two...

The Signals Your Business Is Sending Before the Numbers Catch Up

Business owners love numbers, and for good reason. Revenue, profit, website traffic, conversion rates, inventory and year-over-year growth give us something concrete to measure. They help us understand what is working, identify problems and make better decisions. But...

The Progress You Can’t See Is Still Progress

There is a frustrating point in almost every worthwhile pursuit when you start wondering if any of it is actually working. You’ve been putting in the effort, making the calls, creating the content, building relationships, learning new skills, changing habits, or...

When “Back to Normal” Isn’t the Goal

When life interrupts your business, the natural instinct is to get back to normal as quickly as possible. Maybe it’s an illness or surgery. Maybe it’s a loss, a family situation, burnout, or simply a season of life that requires more of you than usual. Whatever causes...

What You Allow Becomes Your Culture

Most business owners can tell you what they want their company to stand for. They want a team that communicates well. People who take initiative. Employees who respect one another, care about the work they do, and take responsibility when something goes wrong. They...
